Our stolen friend

Unlike most other moai from Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Hoa Hakananai’a was carved from basalt (vs. the softer volcanic stone which was generally used).

Hoa Hakananai'a

Hoa Hakananai’a was removed from Rapa Nui by the crew of a British survey ship, HMS Topaze, in 1868. It arrived in England a year later, and was in the British Museum within months.

While the sailors were hauling off the moai, one asked a local for its name — the response was “Hoa Hakananai’a” — “Our stolen friend.”
