The feeling of falling

For your weekend relaxation — a view of Montmorency Falls, near Quebec City, Quebec, Canada:

The feeling of falling

As waterfalls go, Montmorency is both photogenic and easy to get to, if you’re in the neighborhood (it’s a relatively short jaunt off a nearby highway).  Some thoughts, though, should you be planning a trip to Quebec City:

  1. The falls are easy to see from the side of the highway, but the highway is at essentially the same level as the pool at the foot of the falls — so you won’t get a view of the “splash” at the falls’ base from there.
  2. To get the view, you’ll need to pay for parking near the top of the falls (at the Manoir Montmorency), then walk across the bridge spanning the falls, and partially down a set of steps on the far side — not a particularly athletic feat, but people with mobility issues won’t be able to pull this off.  Should you want to walk the full loop, the falls are 84m (276 ft.) tall — so you’ll be walking down an equivalent height of steps.  Fortunately, there’s an aerial tram that can then (for a nominal fee) take you back to the Manoir from the base of the falls, if you don’t want to walk back up the steps.
  3. I’d definitely recommend a neutral density filter to get a nicely-blurred flow of water.  I used a 6-stop Haida ND filter, and it worked beautifully — an affordable filter, with no color cast.
